Grade 8 Graduation

On Wednesday, June 25, my daughter will be graduating from Grade 8. Honestly, I’m not sure when she got old enough to be going to high school next year. And when in the world did I get old enough to have a child in high school? Aren’t I still 18??

I am absolutely amazed at how big of a deal this is. My grade 8 graduation was very simple. I had the worlds ugliest dress, a bad haircut, got my diploma and came home. Nice, simple, easy and cheap.

Not anymore my friends!

I live in a very small town. Very small. In fact, my daughter’s graduating class consists of 7. Yup, 7.  But, that hasn’t stopped the madness!

So far, we’ve spent $110.00 on the perfect dress, $40.00 on the matching jewellery, $10.00 on shoes (got a deal on those!), $200.00 for the perfect grad gift and $4.00 on matching nailpolish. Wednesday she gets her hair and makeup done. That will be another $100.00 or so.

Oh, and lets not forget the $50.00 graduation picture package and the $25.00 leather bound graduating class of 2008 we had to buy.

Are you kidding me? I know, we don’t have to buy all this for her, but she doesn’t want to be the only one not all dolled up and gorgeous. It’s ridiculous though. Honestly. I can’t believe how out of hand it’s gotten.

But, seriously, what is a parent to do?
